Operational warfare of movement and logistics
1943: Race to Rabaul is an advanced wargame for 2 to 4 players, playable in 2 to 4 hours, and part of the acclaimed Race to… system. Players take on the roles of historical Allied or Japanese commanders, competing for control of key areas across New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
Each commander uses a unique deck of cards, a special ability, and separate resources. Gameplay revolves around alternating actions such as troop movement, building airbases, providing air support, launching land and naval attacks, managing convoys, and sustaining supply lines.
At the heart of the game lies logistics. Lack of food forces divisions to withdraw, lack of ammunition blunts offensives, and lost convoys weaken Japanese defenses. The Allies win by capturing a Japanese supply base – most often Rabaul – or by achieving decisive strategic dominance. Japan wins by inflicting sufficient losses and holding its defensive barrier.
1943: Race to Rabaul is a demanding, deep, and highly thematic operational wargame where every move brings you closer to victory… or disaster.
Description
The Pacific. 1942–1943.
After Pearl Harbor, Japan forged a vast defensive perimeter, with Rabaul as its keystone – the greatest supply and air base in the region. For the Allies, capturing or isolating this stronghold means breaking Japanese dominance in the South Pacific. For the Empire, it is the final shield against inevitable defeat.
Across a map stretching from New Guinea to the Solomon Islands, two visions of war collide. Allied commanders MacArthur and Halsey advance methodically, building airbases and strangling the enemy with superior logistics and air power. Japanese commanders Imamura and Kusaka respond with stubborn defense, daring counterattacks, banzai charges, and convoys sailing under constant threat.
Every decision carries a cost. Every division needs food and ammunition. Every convoy may be sunk. And Rabaul – the ultimate objective – remains dangerously close and terrifyingly distant.
