A strategy that punishes every mistake

Japan. Late 16th century.
Toyotomi Hideyori is too young to rule. The Emperor, bound by tradition, holds no real power. Authority rests with the Council of the Five Elders… at least in theory.

In truth, five mighty clans are already preparing for the inevitable conflict. Tokugawa, Maeda, Mōri, Ukita, and Uesugi wage wars, forge fragile alliances, and weave political schemes to dominate the key provinces of Japan.

In Shōgun, there is no room for chance. Every troop movement, every economic decision, and every diplomatic maneuver brings you closer to supremacy — or to collapse. Only those who understand that power is forged through more than just the blade will prevail.

Description

Shōgun is a strategic area-control game, with each player leading one of five historical Japanese clans. The game revolves around competing for control of provinces, important locations, and neutral clans, which can be subjugated through force or diplomacy.

At the heart of the game lies the River of Actions mechanism. Each player has five action cards arranged in a row, the further to the right a card is, the more powerful its effect. Once used, the card moves back to the leftmost position, pushing the others forward. This system makes long-term planning and anticipation of opponents’ moves essential.

Battles are resolved using a hybrid system of dice and bonus cards. Different unit types provide different dice, while symbols determine damage, defense, shield-breaking, or strategic movement across the map. Victory goes not to the luckiest roll, but to the player who best prepared for the conflict.

Players earn Victory Points by controlling important locations, neutral clans, completing secret and public missions, and developing provinces. The game ends immediately when a player meets the victory conditions or when the round marker reaches the end — at which point the clan with the greatest influence claims supremacy.
